Aragonite – Chraberce, Czech Republic

Aragonite from Chraberce occurs in a quarry located in the southwestern part of the Bohemian Table, about 4 km north of the town of Louny. It forms in basanitic volcanic rock, where thin needle-like to fibrous crystals of aragonite grow in fractured zones, often showing light gray-green to grayish shades.

Appearance and form

The crystalline structures commonly reach several centimeters in length; under favorable conditions, radiating aggregates up to 8 cm in size can form. In some parts, aragonite occurs in brecciated zones, where the gaps between fragments are filled with fine fibrous crystals.

Geological setting

The deposit formed during basaltic volcanic activity above Upper Cretaceous sediments. Aragonite appears in fractured basanite zones, cavities, or on rock contacts. Associated minerals include barite and dolomite.

Rarity and accessibility

Aragonite from Chraberce is a highly sought-after collector’s mineral due to its delicate crystal formations. The quarry is active, and access is restricted, making specimens from this locality particularly valuable.
