Tektites and Other Natural Glasses

Tektites form during large meteorite impacts from terrestrial material that was melted and ejected into the atmosphere. They include, for example, Czech moldavites, indochinites, australites, as well as rarer belizeites or geraisites and many others.

Impact glasses form during impacts of cosmic bodies by melting rocks at or near the impact site. Unlike tektites, they are generally not ejected over great distances and remain associated with the area of a specific impact event. Examples include atacamaites, Darwin glass and impact glass from Lonar Crater.

Natural glasses can also form through other natural processes – for example, by the cooling of volcanic melt or when lightning strikes suitable material. Obsidians are among the best-known volcanic glasses.
