Australite

Australites are tektites found in Australia and are generally smaller than other tektites. They are usually dark or black and occur in basic shapes such as spheres, ovals, boats, dumbbells and teardrops. One of the best-known and most valuable australite shapes is the so-called "button."

Their initial velocity was higher than that of other tektites, sufficient to carry them briefly beyond the Earth's atmosphere. They then re-entered the atmosphere and underwent a rare secondary melting process. Due to the aerodynamic effects of the air, the resulting melt accumulated around the edge of the flying tektite, forming a characteristic ablation flange. This entire process is known as the ablation phenomenon.

Interesting fact: NASA used the shape of australite "buttons" when designing re-entry capsules for the Apollo program in the 1960s.
