Vietnamite

Vietnamites are tektites from Vietnam and belong to the extensive Australasian tektite strewn field. They formed approximately 788,000 years ago during a major impact event in Southeast Asia, when terrestrial rocks were melted and part of the resulting melt was ejected into the atmosphere.

They are typically characterized by a dark brown to almost black color and a glassy character. Vietnamites occur in irregular, elongated and other shapes, and their surfaces may be smoother or variously sculpted. The specimens in this selection come from the Sông Hinh District in Phú Yên Province, Vietnam.

Vietnamites and the Australasian Strewn Field

The Australasian strewn field is the youngest and largest known tektite strewn field on Earth. Material produced by a single impact event is distributed from Indochina and southern China through the Philippines and Indonesia to Australia and other distant regions.

Precise dating places the formation of the Australasian tektites at approximately 788,000 years ago. Although their age and common origin are well established, the source crater has not yet been conclusively identified. Current research points to a source region in Southeast Asia.

Appearance of Vietnamites

Vietnamites consist of natural silicate glass formed from terrestrial rocks during an impact event. Individual specimens can vary considerably in size, shape and surface structure. In strong transmitted light, some thinner areas may display brownish to olive-brown shades.
