Muong Nong

Depending on the conditions of formation, three distinct primary forms of tektites developed – splash-form tektites (common), Muong Nong-type tektites and microtektites. Due to their lower degree of homogeneity, Muong Nong-type tektites are considered particularly valuable for studying the source rocks and the impact process, as they may preserve more information than homogeneous splash-form tektites.

Unlike common tektites, Muong Nong tektites do not show evidence of rotational shaping during flight. Their irregular blocky and shard-like pieces are fragments of a larger original body. They are characterized by a layered texture and greater internal heterogeneity. Crystalline inclusions have been identified within their material, which are absent from typical homogeneous tektites.

The only strewn field with an extensive occurrence of Muong Nong-type tektites is the Australasian strewn field. These tektites are found in Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, northeastern Thailand, along the southern coast of China and on Hainan Island. The tektites offered here come from the type locality of Muong Nong in southern Laos and formed part of an original body weighing approximately 200 kg.
