Aragonite – Vsechlapy, Czech Republic
Aragonite from Všechlapy is one of the best-known Czech localities in the Bohemian Central Highlands. The quarry near the village hosts needle-like to columnar aragonite crystals, often forming fibrous or fan-shaped aggregates. They have a glassy luster and range in color from light gray to pale violet or yellowish shades.
Appearance and Form
The crystals commonly reach several centimeters in length, occasionally exceeding 10 cm. Under favorable conditions, they form radiating or fan-like clusters on basalt cavity walls. Aragonite is frequently found together with calcite and dolomite.
Geological Setting
Aragonite forms in cavities and fractures of basalt that originated from volcanic activity in the Bohemian Central Highlands. It crystallized from calcium-rich hydrothermal fluids circulating through the rock after lava solidification.
Rarity and Accessibility
Specimens from Všechlapy are prized for their delicate crystal structure and aesthetic appeal. The quarry is currently active, and access without permission is restricted, making older finds particularly sought after by collectors.
