Labradorite – a mineral with a unique play of colors
Labradorite is a feldspar mineral renowned for its distinctive optical play of colors, known as labradorescence. When light hits its surface, flashes of blue, green, gold, violet, or orange hues appear, reminiscent of the northern lights.
Origin and occurrence
This mineral was first discovered in 1770 on the Labrador Peninsula in Canada, from which it takes its name. Today it is mined in Madagascar, Russia, Norway, Finland, Mexico, and Ukraine. The colors vary depending on the locality – for example, Madagascar labradorite tends to be lighter in tone.
Properties and uses
Labradorite has a hardness of 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale and, due to its durability and color effect, is used not only in jewelry making but also as a decorative stone – particularly for mosaics, wall coverings, and luxury interiors.
Uniqueness and value
Each piece of labradorite is unique – its shimmer and colorful reflections never repeat. It is sought after by collectors and mineral enthusiasts for its beauty and optical uniqueness.
