The fossilized teeth of the legendary shark Carcharocles (Otodus) megalodon are among the most iconic fossils of prehistoric seas. They originate from the Miocene epoch, more precisely from its upper stage called Serravallian, dating to approximately 13 million years ago, and its teeth could reach nearly 17 centimeters in length. They were robust, triangular, and featured fine serrations used for cutting the flesh and bones of large marine mammals. The specimen was discovered in North Carolina, USA, a region known for rich fossil sediments containing megalodon teeth as well as remains of other shark species.
Megalodon teeth are typically assessed according to two main measurements: maximum length (from the tip to the end of the root section) and width. These parameters help not only with comparing specimens but also with estimating the size of the shark itself.
Although megalodon became extinct approximately 3.6 million years ago, its teeth remain a fascinating window into prehistoric oceans and a reminder of the giant marine fauna that once existed.
