The fossilized teeth of the legendary shark Carcharocles (Otodus) megalodon are among the most iconic fossils of prehistoric seas. They originate from the Miocene epoch, more precisely from its upper stage called Serravallian, dating to approximately 13 million years ago, and its teeth could reach nearly 17 centimeters in length. They were robust, triangular, and featured fine serrations used for cutting the flesh and bones of large marine mammals. The specimen was discovered in North Carolina, USA, a region known for rich fossil sediments containing megalodon teeth as well as remains of other shark species.
