Borzya Meteorite – Rare Pallasite from Russia

The Borzya meteorite was discovered in May 2021 in Zabaykalsky Krai in Russia (near the town of Borzya). This meteorite is classified among main group pallasites. It consists of rounded olivine crystals, which are surrounded by iron and nickel alloys. The olivine crystals are mostly inclusion-free, but some contain finely connected chromite needles and calcium pyroxene.

Mass and Rarity

The total recovered mass is 25.62 kg, which is significantly less than other known pallasites. Pallasites in general are quite rare because they make up only a small fraction of all known meteorites. This small find volume means that the meteorite is less accessible and its samples are rare and valuable. For comparison, the Sericho pallasite, which comes from Kenya, has a total mass of up to 2.8 tons.

Storage and Value

The low mass of the recovered Borzya meteorite additionally means that most samples are carefully stored in scientific institutions. A small portion was stored at the Vernadsky Institute and the main part is stored in DMUH, which stands for the Dedovsk Museum of Universe History. This name refers to a museum focused on space research and related topics, including meteorites and other scientific collections.
Regarding the Borzya meteorite, its main specimen is stored precisely in this collection, meaning it is part of a scientific collection where it is carefully analyzed and preserved for future study. When samples of pallasites such as Borzya become available on the market, their price may be higher than that of commonly available meteorites.
