Krest-Kytyl Meteorite – H5 Stone Chondrite from Yakutia
The Krest-Kytyl meteorite is a recent discovery of an ordinary stone meteorite of type H5, found on October 31, 2020 in the Namsky District of Yakutia. It was discovered by local resident Nyurgustan Nikolaevich Uvarov near the village of Krest-Kytyl, from which it takes its name.
A single piece was found, weighing approximately 57 kilograms. The meteorite had a well-preserved fusion crust, and its surface was covered with prominent regmaglypts, the grooved features formed during atmospheric entry.
Classification and Composition
From a mineralogical perspective, Krest-Kytyl belongs to the H5 chondrite group. This type is characterized by a moderate degree of thermal metamorphism – the original chondrules (spherical silicate structures composed of olivine and pyroxene) are partially recrystallized but still visible. The meteorite also contains metallic iron and troilite.
