Vaca Muerta – mesosiderite from Chile

The Vaca Muerta meteorite was found in 1861 in Chile, specifically in the Atacama Desert, known for its high concentration of meteorite finds. Its unusual name ("dead cow") comes from a nearby riverbank where the skeletons of several cows were lying. The meteorite was then forgotten for more than 100 years until rediscovered in 1985. The main mass created a small crater several meters in diameter, which still exists today. The total recovered mass of Vaca Muerta is about 3.8 tons.

Composition and origin

Vaca Muerta belongs to the mesosiderite group, rare meteorites consisting of a mixture of iron–nickel metal and silicate minerals. It has a chaotic structure where rock-dominated parts with metal inclusions alternate with metal-dominated parts containing rock inclusions. Mesosiderites such as Vaca Muerta likely formed from the collision of two asteroids, which mixed materials from the metallic core and silicate mantle.

Preservation conditions

The Vaca Muerta desert area is known for its arid environment, which contributes to excellent meteorite preservation. Low humidity and minimal rainfall slow the corrosion process, allowing meteorites such as Vaca Muerta to remain in very good condition for thousands of years.
