Jambi Obsidian – Volcanic Glass from Indonesian Sumatra

Jambi Obsidian is a type of volcanic glass originating from the Jambi Province on southern Sumatra in Indonesia. It forms through very rapid cooling of volcanic lava, which prevents mineral crystallization. The result is natural glass with a smooth, often glossy surface. Obsidian from this area is usually dark black, sometimes with a slight brownish or grayish hue, depending on the trace elements and chemical composition of the original lava.

Origin and History

The Jambi Province is known for its volcanic activity and rich geological history. Local obsidian was traditionally used for making tools and weapons thanks to its hardness and sharp edges formed during flaking.

Interesting Facts

Interestingly, obsidian may contain tiny gas bubbles or mineral inclusions that make its appearance even more unique. Due to these internal structures, it can display subtle color reflections or appear slightly translucent depending on the angle of light.
