Tabasco Geodes – The Smallest Geodes in the World
Tabasco geodes, also known as Tabasco geodes or Illianites, are considered the smallest geodes in the world. These tiny geodes, usually between 0.5 and 2 cm in size, come from the region near the town of Tabasco in the Mexican state of Zacatecas.
Formation and Composition
Tabasco geodes form in cavities within volcanic rocks, specifically in basalt flows. Their outer layer is made of agate, while the inner cavity is often filled with small quartz crystals, known as druzy.
The color of these geodes can vary, with common shades including red, gray, black, blue, or white.
History and Use
In the 1970s, Tabasco geodes were very popular in jewelry making, often used as pendants or earrings. Over time, they became rare and nearly disappeared from the market.
In 2018, new deposits were discovered, leading to their return to the market. Mining these geodes is difficult, as they are firmly embedded in hard basalt rock and must be manually extracted.
