Precious opals from the Welo region in Ethiopia are considered some of the most beautiful and highest quality opals in the world. They are known for their unique play of color and high transparency, making them very popular among jewelers and collectors. Most Welo opals are hydrophane, meaning they can absorb water. When they do, they may become more transparent and enhance their colors, but they are also more prone to cracking due to moisture changes.

These opals display vivid, rainbow-like color play that changes with the viewing angle. This effect is caused by light diffraction on tiny silica spheres within the stone’s structure.
