Sericho – pallasite from Kenya

Sericho is a well-known meteorite discovered in the desert of northern Kenya in 2016, with more than 2800 kg recovered to date. It was initially thought to be several separate pieces, later identified as parts of a single meteorite.

Discovery and locality

Fragments ranging from less than 1 kg to 500 kg were found in an area stretching over 45 km, starting a few kilometers west of Habaswein and south of Sericha. Most pieces weigh more than 50 kg.

Weathering

The meteorites found on the surface show minimal weathering, meaning their surface structure and chemical composition remain relatively intact despite Earth’s atmospheric and surface conditions.
