Lunar Meteorite Oued El Hamim 001 – Rare Breccia with Alteration
Oued El Hamim 001 is a rare lunar meteorite classified as a fragmental breccia. It was discovered in 2024 near Ajdabiya, Libya, with a total weight of 33.18 kg found in four large fragments weighing 12.6 kg, 10.8 kg, 6.0 kg, and 3.78 kg.
The exterior surface of the meteorite is light brown and weathered due to long exposure to desert conditions. No fusion crust is present. When cut and polished, the fragments reveal white feldspar and various clasts embedded in a fine-grained gray-green matrix.
Analyses show that Oued El Hamim 001 contains plagioclase, clinopyroxene, and olivine, along with smaller inclusions of chromite, ilmenite, and troilite. Notably, olivines show signs of aqueous alteration, a relatively rare phenomenon in lunar meteorites.
