Dronino Meteorite – Iron Ataxite from Russia
The Dronino meteorite is classified as an iron ataxite meteorite with sulfide inclusions. Most of its meteoritic iron is kamacite, with smaller amounts of rare taenite. The first Dronino fragment, which weighed over 40 kg, was discovered by a Moscow resident while mushroom picking in 2000 near the village of Dronino, about 20 km southeast of Ryazan, Russia. However, it was only identified as a meteorite in 2003 at the Vernadsky Institute. Later that year, scientific expeditions and meteorite hunters collected more than 600 fragments with a total weight of 3,000 kg, with the largest single piece weighing 250 kg.
No historical records of the impact exist, so it is estimated that the meteorite fell before the 12th century, when the area was largely uninhabited—possibly much earlier. This estimate is based on the distribution and depth of the fragments, scattered over an area of 0.5 by 1.5 kilometers. Based on the pattern of the debris field, the impact likely created a crater approximately 30 meters in diameter. The total mass of recovered fragments exceeds 3 tons, with the largest individual pieces weighing several hundred kilograms.
