Orotukan Meteorite – Iron Unique from Russia
The Orotukan meteorite is an iron meteorite weighing 555 kilograms, discovered in 2022 in the Magadan region in eastern Russia. It was found at the foot of the left slope of a river valley, near the confluence with the Strelka stream, which is a left tributary of the Orotukan River.
Classification
The Orotukan meteorite is classified as an ungrouped iron meteorite, meaning that its chemical composition and structure differ significantly from other iron meteorites that have already been scientifically categorized.
Current Status and Importance
At present, the main part of the meteorite is stored at the Fersman Mineralogical Museum in Moscow, where further analysis is underway. Due to its uniqueness, the Orotukan meteorite is considered a significant addition to collections and a subject of intensive scientific interest. Because of its recent discovery, more detailed information about the Orotukan meteorite is still limited.
