Meteorites NWA X – Mysterious Finds from Northwest Africa
Meteorites designated as NWA X originate from the region of Northwest Africa, where numerous meteorites have fallen, resulting in many different strewn fields. This area, which includes present-day Morocco, Libya, Algeria, and other countries, is known for various meteorites such as NWA 869 and NWA 7325. When it is unclear to which specific fall a meteorite should be assigned, it is generally referred to as NWA X. Different meteorite types may occur within a single strewn field, and without laboratory analysis it is not possible to determine exactly which find a particular meteorite belongs to.
Chondrites represent the most common type of meteorite, accounting for up to 75% of all known meteorite falls on Earth. These meteorites are characterized by the presence of small spherical grains called chondrules, which formed in the early Solar System more than 4 billion years ago. Chondrites are often as old as the Earth itself and provide valuable information about the chemical composition and processes that occurred during the formation of the Solar System.
