Vanadinite
Vanadinite is one of the most distinctive and highly popular collector minerals. It attracts attention mainly with its deep red to orange crystals, which have a characteristic hexagonal shape and a pronounced vitreous to adamantine lustre. It belongs to the vanadate mineral group and has the chemical formula Pb₅(VO₄)₃Cl. Its main components are lead, vanadium and chlorine.
Formation and localities
Vanadinite forms mainly in the oxidation zones of lead deposits, most commonly in regions with a dry climate. Its best-known localities include Morocco, Mexico, Namibia, Argentina and Arizona. Moroccan specimens often form aesthetic compositions with barite. In some cases, the barite, which is usually white or yellowish, may be coated with manganese compounds. These give the barite dark brown to black shades, creating a striking contrast with the vanadinite crystals. Every natural specimen is unique and may vary in shape, colour, lustre and crystal growth.
Warning: Vanadinite contains lead. We recommend washing your hands after handling.
