Al Haggounia 001 Meteorite – Enstatite Chondrite from Western Sahara

The Al Haggounia 001 meteorite was discovered in 2006 near Al Haggounia in Western Sahara. It was initially classified as an aubrite (an enstatite-rich achondrite), but later studies reclassified it as a vesicular, incompletely melted impact melt of an EL enstatite chondrite.

Mass and Surface Characteristics

This meteorite is notable for its mass. Approximately 3 tons of material were found scattered across an area of around 40 km. Fragments vary in size from a few grams to several tens of kilograms. The outer surface is often rusty brown due to significant weathering, indicating long-term exposure to terrestrial conditions.

Composition and Structure

Mineralogically, Al Haggounia 001 is composed mainly of enstatite and plagioclase, with the presence of troilite, graphite, daubréelite, oldhamite, silicon-rich kamacite, and schreibersite. Its porous structure and the presence of yellow sulfur stains indicate extensive alteration.
