Tni-Haia 001 Meteorite – Rare Rumuruti Chondrite from Algeria
The Tni-Haia 001 meteorite was discovered in the southwestern part of the Algerian desert on January 5 and 6, 2022 by meteorite hunters. It is classified as a Rumuruti chondrite (R3), which are rare types of stony meteorites with a low degree of metamorphism, containing numerous chondrules (spherical mineral grains) that indicate minimal thermal alteration.
Mass and Composition
Total weight is 2 kg, with fragments showing a dark gray to black surface, partially covered with a fusion crust. Petrographic analysis revealed spherical chondrules about 350 µm in diameter within a matrix containing Fe-rich olivine and sodic plagioclase. The meteorite contains no free metal but includes troilite, pentlandite, and titanium-bearing chromite.
