Tsarev Meteorite

The Tsarev meteorite probably fell to Earth on December 6, 1922 at 7 a.m. near the village of Tsarev in the Volgograd region of Russia. However, this date is not certain, as the fall was not directly observed. The first fragments were found in 1968, and the meteorite was officially identified in 1979.

Characteristics

Type: The Tsarev meteorite is classified as an ordinary chondrite of type L5, meaning it contains less iron compared to other chondrites.
Composition: The chemical composition is typical for L-type chondrites, with higher amounts of silicon, oxygen, and magnesium, and lower contents of iron and nickel. It contains common chondritic minerals such as olivine, pyroxene, and plagioclase.
Fragment weight: The largest recovered piece weighs 284 kg, and the total mass of all known fragments of the Tsarev meteorite is about 1.5 tons.
Number of fragments: A total of 28 individual fragments were found.
Distribution: The maximum distance between individual find sites was 6.0 km.
Additional finds: Since the 1990s up to the present, additional fragments have been discovered.
