Septarian "Dragon Egg" with Crystal Cavity
Septarian, often referred to by the trade name "Dragon Egg", is a natural mineral concretion distinguished by its characteristic network of cracks and striking patterns. When polished into an egg shape, the contrast between the host rock and the minerals that gradually filled the fractures over millions of years becomes especially pronounced.
How Septarian Forms
Septarian nodules formed millions of years ago within sedimentary rocks, most commonly on the floors of ancient seas. Around organic remains or another solid core, fine sediments gradually accumulated to form a compact, rounded concretion. As the material dried, contracted and hardened, characteristic cracks developed. Mineral-rich solutions later penetrated these fractures, depositing minerals such as calcite, aragonite and others. These mineral-filled cracks create the distinctive septarian pattern. If part of the cavity remained unfilled, a crystal-lined hollow could develop inside.
Appearance and Finishing
Natural septarian nodules are typically rounded or irregular in shape. Cutting, polishing and shaping them into an egg highlights their contrasting colours, intricate structure and fine mineral veins. The name "Dragon Egg" is inspired by both the egg-shaped form and the unique pattern resembling dragon scales. Every specimen is unique and may differ in colour, cavity size, crystal coverage and the arrangement of mineral fillings. Septarian is valued as a decorative piece, a collector's specimen and an original gift for lovers of minerals and natural formations.
