Campo del Cielo Meteorite

Campo del Cielo comes from an extensive meteorite field in northern Argentina, in the region between the provinces of Chaco and Santiago del Estero. The impact of the iron body approximately 4,000 years ago created more than twenty impact craters and scattered numerous metallic fragments over a large area.

Thanks to the large amount of preserved material, Campo del Cielo is one of the best-known and most accessible iron meteorites and is suitable both for beginning collectors and for larger meteorite collections.

History of Campo del Cielo

The indigenous peoples of South America knew of the large iron masses in the area before the arrival of Europeans. The first documented European reports date to 1576, when a Spanish expedition was sent to the region to investigate reports of large pieces of iron.

During the following centuries, many other large and small fragments were discovered. Among the best known are the enormous masses Gancedo and El Chaco, which rank among the largest individual meteorite masses ever found on Earth.

Composition and Classification

Campo del Cielo is an iron meteorite classified as IAB-MG. It consists mainly of iron and nickel and also contains smaller amounts of other elements such as cobalt, phosphorus, germanium, gallium and iridium.

Its metallic structure formed during the extremely slow cooling of iron-nickel material within its parent planetary body. On properly prepared, polished and etched sections, its characteristic internal crystalline structure can be observed.

Smaller specimens are suitable as a first genuine meteorite or as an affordable addition to a collection. Larger pieces show the irregular shape, surface structure and massive metallic character of an iron meteorite more clearly.
