Native Copper
Native copper is a mineral composed predominantly of the chemical element Cu. In nature, it may occur as irregular fragments, thin sheets, wire-like aggregates or branching dendritic formations.
Fresh copper surfaces display a characteristic metallic red to copper-orange color and a strong metallic luster. However, exposure to air, moisture and other surrounding substances gradually alters the surface. It may darken to brown shades or develop a green to blue-green patina formed by secondary copper minerals.
Formation of Native Copper
Native copper forms primarily in hydrothermal veins, volcanic rocks and the oxidation zones of copper deposits. It is often found together with minerals such as cuprite, malachite, azurite, calcite or quartz.
Copper is relatively soft, highly malleable and ductile. Unlike most minerals, it tends to deform under mechanical stress rather than break into sharp fragments. Its hardness ranges from approximately 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale.
Care of Native Copper
Changes in color and the formation of a patina are natural properties of copper and are not considered defects. We recommend storing the specimen in a dry environment and avoiding unnecessary contact with bare hands. Do not use aggressive chemical cleaning agents, as they may damage the original surface of the mineral. Each native copper specimen is unique and may vary in shape, structure, color and degree of natural oxidation.
