Stony-Iron meteorites
Stony-iron meteorites form a rare group of meteorites in which a metallic component, composed mainly of iron and nickel, is prominently combined with silicate minerals. Based on their structure and formation, they are divided primarily into pallasites and mesosiderites.
Pallasites are characterized by a metallic matrix containing olivine crystals, while mesosiderites consist of a mixture of iron-nickel metal and silicate rock fragments. Both groups formed through complex processes associated with the evolution and collisions of differentiated asteroids in the early Solar System.

Stony-Iron Meteorites
Stony-iron meteorites represent an intermediate group between meteorites composed predominantly of silicate minerals and iron meteorites rich in iron and nickel. Their structure records processes that took place inside differentiated asteroids as well as during their subsequent collisions.
Pallasites
Pallasites are among the most visually distinctive meteorites. They consist of an iron-nickel metallic matrix containing crystals of olivine. When cut and polished, the olivine grains may be translucent and display shades ranging from yellow and golden to green.
Their formation is associated with differentiated asteroids in which metallic and silicate components became separated. The exact formation mechanism of individual pallasite groups remains the subject of scientific research and may not have been the same for all of them.
Mesosiderites
Mesosiderites have a different structure. They are breccias composed of approximately comparable proportions of iron-nickel metal and silicate rock fragments. Their structure probably formed during major collisions of differentiated asteroids, in which material originating from different parts of the parent body became mixed together.
Well-known mesosiderites include Vaca Muerta from Chile and Estherville from the USA. Cut sections of mesosiderites often reveal a striking mixture of bright metal and darker silicate fragments.
Pallasite or Mesosiderite – What Is the Difference?
The most obvious difference can be seen in their internal structure. In pallasites, individual olivine crystals are usually clearly visible within the metallic matrix. Mesosiderites, on the other hand, consist of an irregular mixture of metal and various silicate rock fragments, giving them a breccia-like structure.
