Lonar Impact Glass

Lonar impact glass comes from the surroundings of Lonar Crater in the state of Maharashtra, India. It formed during the impact of a cosmic body, whose energy melted the local basaltic rocks within a very short time. Part of the resulting melt was ejected into the surrounding area and, during rapid cooling, solidified into natural impact glass.

The exact age of the impact has not yet been conclusively determined. Different dating methods have produced varying results, and therefore the age of Lonar Crater remains a subject of scientific discussion.

Lonar Crater

Lonar Crater has a diameter of approximately 1.8 km and a depth of around 120–150 metres. It formed in the basaltic lava flows of the extensive Deccan Traps volcanic province, which are approximately 65 million years old. Lonar is a particularly important impact structure because it is one of only a few known terrestrial craters formed directly in basaltic bedrock.

Appearance of Lonar Impact Glass

Impact glasses from Lonar occur in various forms – from irregular fragments and larger impact melts to small glassy spherules. They are most commonly black to dark brown and may have a glassy, matte or sculpted surface.

Research conducted directly in the crater area has confirmed the presence of impact glasses and glassy spherules within the ejecta surrounding the crater. Their structure preserves information about the extreme temperatures and pressures generated during the impact.

Chemical Composition and Scientific Importance

The chemical composition of Lonar impact glasses is closely related to the local basaltic rocks that were melted during the impact. Research on impactites from Lonar has revealed various degrees of shock alteration and mineral melting, making the locality important for studying processes that occur during high-velocity impacts of cosmic bodies.

An Exceptional Impact Locality

Because Lonar Crater formed in basaltic bedrock, it is an important natural analogue for impact structures on other rocky bodies in the Solar System, particularly Mars and the Moon. Impact glasses from this locality therefore represent not only interesting collectible material, but also a direct record of the extreme processes that occurred during crater formation.
