Tarkint 001 – Martian Meteorite

Tarkint 001 is one of the most recently discovered Martian meteorites. It was found in 2025 in the Tarkint region of Mali and was subsequently classified as a shergottite.

Mineral Composition and Structure

Tarkint 001 has a fine-grained igneous texture with prominent olivine crystals embedded in a fine-grained groundmass composed mainly of pyroxene (pigeonite) and maskelynite. Maskelynite formed through the transformation of original plagioclase under the extreme pressure of the impact that ejected the meteorite from the surface of Mars into space. The meteorite also contains small grains of chromite, titanomagnetite, and troilite.

Origin from Mars

Tarkint 001 represents an exceptionally rare material originating from Mars. Martian meteorites account for only a tiny fraction of all known meteorites, and their origin has been confirmed through laboratory analyses comparing the composition of gases trapped within their minerals with data obtained from the Martian atmosphere by space missions.

Rarity and Collectible Value

The total known weight of the meteorite is approximately 2 kilograms, making it a relatively rare Martian meteorite. The limited amount of available material increases its collectible value and makes it an attractive addition to any meteorite collection.
