Guangdong obsidians are natural volcanic glasses from Guangdong Province in southern China. Obsidian forms when silica-rich lava cools rapidly, preventing minerals from having enough time to develop a normal crystalline structure. The result is predominantly amorphous natural glass.

How Does Obsidian Form?

Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass. It forms when lava cools so rapidly that its components do not have enough time to arrange themselves into larger mineral crystals. The material therefore remains predominantly glassy and develops its characteristic glassy luster and conchoidal fracture.

Obsidians are most commonly associated with volcanic rocks rich in silica. Their exact color, translucency and structure depend on the chemical composition of the original melt as well as the conditions under which it cooled.

Appearance of Guangdong Obsidians

Specimens from Guangdong are predominantly dark to almost black. Fresh fracture surfaces may show a pronounced glassy luster, while the natural outer surface may be more matte or variously textured.

A conchoidal fracture is also characteristic and is a typical feature of obsidian and other natural glasses. Each piece has its own irregular shape and surface structure.
