Bubble obsidian
Bubble obsidian is an unusual form of natural volcanic glass from Armenia, characterized by a strongly vesicular to bubble-like structure. During the development of the volcanic melt, gases were released from the magma and some of the resulting cavities remained preserved as the glass solidified.
The individual cavities may be spherical, elongated or irregular in shape and are often separated only by very thin glassy walls. This exceptional structure distinguishes bubble obsidian from ordinary compact obsidian and gives each specimen a unique appearance.

How Does the Bubble Structure in Obsidian Form?
Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed from silica-rich lava. Volcanic gases are also dissolved in magma and may be released as pressure decreases, creating bubbles. In most compact obsidians, these bubbles disappear during the evolution of the melt, but in bubble obsidian some of the cavities remain preserved after the material solidifies.
The result is a strongly vesicular structure composed of cavities of various sizes. Some may be elongated in the direction of movement of the original melt and can reach considerable dimensions. The walls between individual cavities may be extremely thin and their edges very sharp.
Appearance of Bubble Obsidian
The material is predominantly black to dark brown and has a typical glassy luster. Fractured surfaces may display smooth, glossy areas, while open gas cavities give the specimens a highly sculpted and unusual appearance.
Each piece differs in size, shape and the arrangement of its individual cavities. Due to its very thin glassy walls, bubble obsidian is also relatively fragile and should be handled with extra care.
