Fulgurites, sometimes referred to as “petrified lightning”, are natural glassy formations created when lightning strikes sand, soil or rock. The extreme energy of the electrical discharge melts material around the lightning channel within a very short time, after which it rapidly solidifies into natural glass.

Typical sand fulgurites often form hollow tubes with irregular branching shapes that follow the path of the electrical discharge through the material. The inner walls are usually glassy and smoother, while partially melted grains of sand may remain attached to the outer surface.

How Do Fulgurites Form?

When lightning strikes, an extremely powerful electrical discharge passes through the material. The temperature within the lightning channel itself can reach tens of thousands of degrees, while the surrounding mineral material is heated within a very short time to temperatures high enough to melt it.

If lightning strikes quartz-rich sand, individual grains may melt and form a glassy material rich in silicon dioxide. Because of the extremely rapid cooling, the material does not have enough time to recrystallize and remains in a glassy state.

Typical Appearance of Fulgurites

Sand fulgurites most commonly have a tubular, branching or irregular shape. A central cavity forms along the path of the electrical discharge. The inner surface may be smooth and glassy, while the outer part is usually rougher and consists of melted and partially melted grains of the surrounding sand.

Their color depends mainly on the composition of the original material and may range from pale beige and gray through brown to very dark shades. Each fulgurite has its own irregular structure created by the specific path of the lightning discharge.

A Fragile Record of a Lightning Strike

Fulgurites are generally very fragile. Their thin glassy walls can break easily, which is why long or well-preserved specimens are found less frequently than small fragments.

Each piece represents a direct natural record of an extremely brief and energetic process in which lightning transformed the original material into natural glass within a fraction of a second.
