Jambi obsidians are natural volcanic glasses from Jambi Province on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. Obsidian forms when silica-rich lava cools rapidly, preventing minerals from having enough time to develop a normal crystalline structure. The result is predominantly amorphous natural glass.
Obsidians from this region are typically characterized by a dark gray, brownish-black to almost black color and a pronounced glassy luster. Individual specimens may differ in shape, surface structure, shade and translucency, and each piece represents a unique natural original.

Obsidian from Jambi Province
Jambi Province lies in the central part of Sumatra, and its geological development is closely associated with volcanic activity. Scientific analyses have confirmed several different natural obsidian sources in the Jambi region, including the areas of Merangin and Sarolangun. Individual sources can be distinguished by differences in their trace-element composition.
How Does Obsidian Form?
Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass. It forms when lava, usually rich in silica, cools very rapidly. The melt solidifies before larger mineral crystals can form, therefore retaining a glassy structure.
A characteristic property of obsidian is its conchoidal fracture, which produces smooth curved fracture surfaces and extremely sharp edges. Because of this property, obsidian has been used as a raw material for tool production in many parts of the world for thousands of years.
Prehistoric Use of Obsidian in Sumatra
The Jambi region also has an important archaeological history connected with the use of obsidian. Obsidian flakes, cores and tools have been discovered at local archaeological sites, demonstrating the processing of this natural glass by prehistoric inhabitants of Sumatra.
One of the best-known sites is Tianko Panjang Cave in the Jambi region, where obsidian artifacts were found in layers dating to approximately 10,000 years ago. Obsidian therefore represented an important raw material for local communities as early as the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene.
Appearance of Jambi Obsidians
The offered specimens consist predominantly of a dark to almost black glassy material. Fresh fracture surfaces may display a pronounced glassy luster, while the natural outer surface is often more matte or variously textured. Some thinner areas may be slightly translucent when viewed in strong transmitted light.
