Irgizite – tektite from Kazakhstan
Irgizite is a specific type of tektite that formed after a meteorite impact in Kazakhstan. This unique form of natural glass is named after the Irgiz River region, located near the well-known Zhamanshin impact crater.
Formation
As a result of the meteorite impact on the Earth's surface, extremely high temperatures and pressures were generated, leading to the melting and ejection of terrestrial rocks into the atmosphere, where they subsequently cooled rapidly and formed a glassy structure. At the impact site, a crater was created with a diameter of about 14 km, and its age is estimated to be approximately 900,000 years.
Characteristics
Irgizites often have an irregular shape and a distinctive glassy texture. The color may vary, but they are usually dark, ranging from black to dark brown or greenish. Like other tektites, Irgizites are primarily composed of silicon dioxide but may also contain various trace elements.
