Snowflake Obsidian – natural volcanic glass

Snowflake Obsidian is a type of natural volcanic glass distinguished by its characteristic appearance – white or gray "snowflake-like" patterns scattered throughout the black glassy matrix. These spots are formed by mineral crystals such as quartz or tridymite, which develop through gradual crystallization in the originally homogeneous obsidian.

Formation

Like common obsidian, Snowflake Obsidian forms through the rapid cooling of silica-rich lava. This process creates a glassy structure without a crystalline lattice. Over time, some areas of the obsidian begin to crystallize and form small spherical structures known as spherulites. These mineral inclusions visually appear as white or light gray spots resembling snowflakes – hence the name Snowflake Obsidian.

Characteristics

Snowflake Obsidian typically has a black color with distinct white to gray spots. Its hardness ranges from 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale. The structure is amorphous – glassy – but in some places affected by zones of partial crystallization. This type of obsidian is found in volcanic regions around the world and is especially known from Indonesia.
