Muong Nong Tektites – a unique form of tektites from Southeast Asia

Muong Nong tektites represent one of the three primary forms of tektites formed under different impact conditions. Together with common splash-form tektites and microtektites, they are part of a group of natural glasses created by meteorite impacts. Unlike the homogeneous splash forms, Muong Nong tektites are less uniform, providing valuable insight into the source rocks and the impact process.

Characteristics and appearance

Unlike regular tektites, Muong Nong tektites show no signs of rotational shaping during flight. Their irregular, blocky and fragmentary shapes are parts of larger original masses. They are known for their layered texture and higher internal heterogeneity. Within their structure, crystalline inclusions have been identified – a feature absent in common tektites.

Occurrence and locality

Muong Nong tektites occur exclusively within the Australasian tektite strewn field. They are found in Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, northeastern Thailand, on the southern coast of China, and on Hainan Island. The specimens offered for sale come from the type locality Muong Nong in southern Laos, where they formed part of an original mass weighing around 200 kg.
